What is the Unitary Development Plan (UDP)?

The Unitary Development Plan (UDP) is part of the development plan for the borough. It was approved in December 2003 and was amended and saved as of 28 September 2007 by direction from the Secretary of State.

The UDP contains a wide range of policies on housing, the environment, transport, leisure, retail and community uses. Along with other development plan documents and council strategies, the UDP aims to improve and create a better borough for those who live, work and visit.

Since 2004, the planning system has changed and the UDP is gradually being replaced by a series of development plan documents that form part of the Local Development Framework (LDF) for the borough. Until it is replaced by the LDF, the UDP will be updated as each new LDF document is adopted.

The Employment Development Plan Document (EDPD) was adopted on 25 November 2008 and has superseded the Employment policies contained in Chapter 7 and the following Implementation Policies contained in Chapter 2: IMP4.1, IMP.4.2, IMP.4.3 and IMP.4.4.  The UDP has been updated to reflect theses changes.

The Brentford Area Action Plan (BAAP) was adopted on 27 January 2009 and has superseded the policies contained in Chapter 2:IMP.2.1 and IMP.3.1.

The UDP is in the process of being updated to reflect the changes.

How do I check if a site is designated in the development plan?

The Proposals Map shows areas covered by policies and proposals in the UDP and EDPD.  It is in the process of being updated to reflect the Brentford Area Action Plan (BAAP). A draft version of Brentford plan area map is available from the BAAP web pages.

For information about a particular site within Hounslow please use the online proposals map to search for a particular address (see Related Links). This will advise you what the designation is (if there is one) and of any planning constraints on a site.

Where can I view the UDP?

The UDP and Proposals Map are available for viewing at the Civic Centre, local libraries and from these web pages.  Copies of the UDP and Proposals Map can also be purchased at a cost of £30 for residents and £60 + £8.80 p&p for non-residents.

Individual Proposals Maps can also be purchased at a cost of £10 per map (three maps are available covering the western, central and eastern areas of the borough).

Payment must be made by cheque payable to the ‘London Borough of Hounslow’ and should be sent to the following address:
