Ideally, noisy DIY (do-it-yourself) work should be carried out between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday, between 9am and 1pm on Saturday and not at all on Sunday, Public and Bank Holidays (except for emergencies).
Obviously, people who work must often carry out their DIY projects in the evenings and at weekends, but unless it is in an emergency, it would not be reasonable for particularly noisy DIY work to be carried out after 8pm at night. It is advised that you speak to your neighbour if you wish to carry out noisy DIY work in the evenings
It is also a good idea to inform your neighbours of the work you are carrying out and how long you expect it to take. Where possible inform them in advance of noisy DIY work to give them the opportunity to make arrangements to be elsewhere when this happens. Complaints may be avoided if people are aware of your timetable.
If we receive complaints and noisy works continue to be carried out outside the guideline hours we have the powers to serve an abatement notice under the Section 80 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Failure to abide by the notice could lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £5000.
