If you have an audible vehicle alarm you have a responsibility to ensure that the risk of persistent ringing due to false alarms is kept to a minimum.
If our Pollution Control Officers are contacted by a complainant about your vehicle alarm and consider it to be a statutory nuisance it will be dealt with under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 (as amended) and an abatement notice may be served on the driver/registered keeper.
If after consulting the police the owner of the vehicle cannot be found the Council can request the services of a competent engineer to enter your vehicle and silence the alarm. If the alarm cannot be silenced or the vehicle is considered unsafe after it has been silenced the car can be towed away to a place of safekeeping. The Council will charge you for any costs incurred.
To prevent false alarms ensure that any system installed or taken over is fitted and maintained in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and meets any relevant legislation or codes of practice. Proper installation and regular routine maintenance of equipment is essential.
Complain about a vehicle intruder alarm
To complain about an audible vehicle alarm call 020 8583 5555 during working hours and your complaint will be passed to the Pollution Control Team. On a Friday/Saturday night between 10pm and 4am call 020 8583 2222 and an operator will pass on your complaint to the Noise Team.
Please be patient as the process to have an alarm silenced normally takes a number of hours.
If the vehicle is on private land a warrant has to be obtained from a Justice of the Peace and this will further prolong the time it takes to have the alarm silenced.
