Sports management, leadership and coaching

A young apprenticeship in sports management, leadership and coaching is a fantastic opportunity if you want to pursue a career in this sector.

This programme is a high quality route for well motivated 14 to 16 year old pupils of good ability to pursue an industry specific vocational programme.

There are dozens of specialist roles within the sports industry and this course will prepare you to progress on to occupations such as:

  • Fitness instructor

  • Coach

  • Sports development officer

  • Professional sports

  • Outdoor sports organiser

  • Roles in social inclusion

  • Events steward

  • Manager / leader

  • Community recreation

Where will I study?

The course programme will take place at Isleworth & Syon School where you will be taught by specialist tutors on one-day per week over two-years (Tuesday in Yr 10 and Thursday in Yr 11).

What will I study, what qualifications will I gain and how will I be assessed?

The BTEC First Diploma in Sport at level 2 will be the main course of study and is equivalent to four GCSE grades A* - C. The BTEC course consists of six units:

  • The body in Sport

  • Health, Safety and Injury in Sport

  • Practical Sport

  • Sports Industry

  • Preparation for Sport

  • Planning and Leading Sports Activities

This course is practical and you will learn by completing projects and coursework assignments in realistic workplace situations. You will also have the opportunity to achieve other qualifications. These include:

  • FA Junior Football Organisers Award course (code: FJOC)

  • Rugby Union – Leaders Award

  • Multi-Skills Awards – L1

  • NCFE - Certificate in Sports Coaching

  • St John’s Ambulance Young Persons First Aider Course

  • Other sports / WRL qualifications and Awards i.e. life guarding, ASDAN, etc

  • BSC Award in Health & Safety at work

  • EdExcel BTEC Level 2 WorkSkills Award

In addition, you will be required to spend the equivalent of 50 days with employers doing work-based activities including work experience over the two years. Some short periods of time may need to be completed during school holidays and sometimes weekends.

Next step

At the end of the course you will have a full level 2 qualification recognised by the SkillsActive sector. The BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment and provides good grounding to go on to more advanced courses. Your Connexions PA at school will be able to help you with your next step.
