Young apprenticeship programme in health and social care

Who is this course for?
This programme offers a high qualifty route for well motivated 14 to 16 year old pupils of good ability to pursue an industry specific vocational programme. A Young Apprenticeship within health and social care is a fantatsic opportunity if you want to pursue a career in this industry. Within healthcare there are dozens of specialist roles and this course will prepare you for occupations such as:
Healthcare: healthcare providers, nursing, medical staff, dental suport staff, chiropody, dietetics, othoptics, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, radiography etc
Social care: caring for adults with physical or learning disabilities, carers, careers in social work, rehabilitation, community support etc
Children's learning and development: caring or looking after children, eg a nursery nurse, classroom assistant in a school, childminders, nannies, youth work, playwork etc
Where will I study?
The course will involve you studying one-day per week at Brentford School for Girls where you will be taught by specialist tutors with specialist facilities which will provide practical learning activities. You will need to attend one day per week – Tuesdays throughout year 10 and on Thursdays when you reach Year 11. Some sessions will involve the use of specialist facilities (simulated ward and electronic mannequins) at Thames Valley University, Brentford.
What will work experience involve?
To achieve the apprenticeship, you will complete 50 days of work based learning and work experience with employers over the two years linked to the H&SC qualifications being studied - approximately 17 days spent within social care, 17 days within health care and 17 days within children’s learning and development eg, clinics, hospital, residential care homes, children’s nurseries, etc. Some blocks of time may need to be completed during school holiday periods.
What will I study and what qualifications will I gain?
The BTEC First Diploma in Health and Social Care will be the main course of study and is equivalent to four GCSE grades A* - C. This course is practical and you will learn and be assessed by completing projects and assignments. You will study six units based on a variety of themes chosen from:
Unit 1 - Communication and individual rights within health and social care sectors
Unit 2 - Individual needs within the health and social care sectors
Unit 3 - Vocational experience in a health or social care setting
Unit 5 – Anatomy and Physiology for Health and Social Care
Unit 6 - Human lifespan development
Unit 9 - The impact of diet on health
In addition, you will also have the opportunity to achieve other qualifications related to the health and social care industry including:
BSC - Certificate in Health & Safety at Work - Ref No: 100/5013/9
St John’s Ambulance Young Persons First Aider Course
Other H&SC / WRL qualifications and Awards i.e. EdExcel WorkSkills
and if successful you will end up with the equivalent of 5 GCSE A* to C grades
Next step
At the end of the course you will have a full level 2 qualification recognised by the H&SC sector. The BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment and provides good grounding to go on to more advanced courses. Along with your GCSEs and with further training or study, you will be well prepared to follow your chosen career in this sector.
