The Authority's five special schools cater for children with:
emotional and behavioural difficulties (Cedars Primary and Syon Park Secondary)
moderate learning difficulties and autism (Marjory Kinnon)
severe learning difficulties (Linden Bennett Primary and Oaklands Secondary)
There are also centres for pupils with particular special needs attached to mainstream schools.
In addition, Hounslow operates a Pupil Referral Service. This incorporates the Pupil Referral Unit (PRU), the Education Other Than at School Service and the Hospital Tuition Team. There is close co-operation with the District Health Authority.
Wood Lane Centre
In addition, Hounslow operates the Wood Lane Centre. This incorporates the Pupil Referral Service, the Education Other Than at School Service and the Hospital Tuition Team. There is close co-operation with the District Health Authority.
Pupil Referral Services/Units are legally a type of LA maintained school that provides education for children of compulsory school age who may otherwise not receive suitable education. The aim of such units is to provide suitable alternative education on a temporary basis for pupils who may not be able to attend a mainstream school. The focus of the units should be to get pupils back into a mainstream school. Pupils in the units may include:
Teenage mothers
Pupils excluded from school
School phobics
Pupils in the assessment phase of a statement
Hounslow Teaching Support Service
Hounslow Teaching Support Service works with mainstream and special schools, the Wood Lane Centre and SEN centres to promote the successful inclusion of all pupils experiencing difficulties with learning. They offer support, advice and INSET on assessment, the planning of effective programmes, curriculum differentiation and the use of appropriate resources.
