The Local Authority believes that parents of pupils with a Statement of Special Educational Needs have the same responsibility to ensure that their children attend school as any other parent.
The LA will consider providing support for travel from home to school for pupils who are attending a Special School or Centre attached to a mainstream school, based on a pupil’s individual needs, where the following circumstances apply:
Where the distance to the named school is greater than the distance to the nearest suitable school or exceeds 2 miles for infant and primary aged children; 3 miles for secondary; and/or
Where the nature and/or severity of the pupil’s special educational needs make it unreasonable for them to travel without assistance.
Pupils with Statements which name a mainstream school would not normally qualify for transport support.
Where possible, pupils would be expected to develop independent travel skills as part of their educational programme and where appropriate transport arrangements will be time-limited.
Where a child has been placed at a residential school by the LA, parents will be asked to make their child’s travel arrangements, and can claim reimbursement.
