The DfES website, "GovernorNet", is designed for governors, provides up-to-date information on all aspects of school governance and features links to other useful sites. The "National Governors Council" is a national organisation with member Associations in many of the Local Education Authority Areas across England.
The NGC also has a website. "GovernorLine" run a free professional helpline offering email and telephone support to school governors, clerks and individuals involved directly in school governance in England. Check out the websites from the Links button above.
Hounslow's Support
The Hounslow Children's Services & Lifelong Learning Department (CS&LL) Governing Bodies Section offers schools a comprehensive support service providing clerking, advice and general support to governors and schools to enable them to carry out their duties in the most effective way and in accordance with legal requirements.
The section includes Governor Development & Training that offers a comprehensive programme of training and development, free of charge for all school governors. Details of this programme are disseminated every term. In addition, it provides all governors with a copy of its Handbook. This includes information and guidance about governing body roles and responsibilities. You would also have access to Hounslow's Governors Central Loan Library and to the Governors Library that your school maintains.
Most Hounslow governing bodies elect a Link Governor. The Link Governor becomes the main point of contact between the governors and the Governor Training Co-ordinator, who is responsible for the Governor Training Programme. Link Governors meet once a term and the minutes are published. All Hounslow governors, therefore, have someone on their Governing Body who they can talk to about their training needs.
