Help for nursery, primary and secondary school pupils
Some parents choose to educate their children at home.
We recognise the right for parents who wish to carry out education at home by giving full legal responsibility to the parents/carers. We also evaluate the suitability of the home provisions provided by the parents and carer.
The right to home education is conditional upon the parents providing an efficient education suitable to the age ability and age of the child.
What should you do if you want to educate your son or daughter at home?
The responsibility of the parent is clearly set out in Section 7 of the Education Act 1996.
For further information, see Educating Children at Home, England and Wales (Department for Education and Skills (DfES) 1998).
