Attendance and welfare

The School Attendance and Education Welfare Service is an integral part of the Children's Services and Lifelong Learning Department’s support services and works in partnership with schools, parents and other agencies to improve attendance rates and enable children to engage fully in education provision.

The School Attendance and Education Welfare Service acts on behalf of the LEA in enforcement of a parent's duty to ensure children they are responsible for are in receipt of appropriate education. The safety and protection of children is paramount and in addition to making sure school age children are safe in school each day the education welfare service works to safeguard children by ensuring child employment and child performance regulations are met.

Education welfare officers are able to support children and families where pupils are experiencing difficulties in school and welfare issues are disrupting a child’s education.

Education welfare officers participate in multi agency partnerships which operate to prevent children from becoming victims or perpetrators of crime and anti-social behaviour.
