What is the EYFS?
The EYFS is a stage of children’s development from birth to the end of their first (reception) year at school. It outlines how early years practitioners should work with children and their families to support development and learning. It describes how you can make sure that your child achieves the most that they can in their early years.
EYFS Principles
Early learning is the key to your child’s future and families make the greatest difference at this stage. The framework is based around 4 important principles:
Good health
To be happy
To feel safe
To be successful
What Can I do as a Parent / Carer?
You are your child’s first teacher. When they are with you learning can take place at any time and anywhere:
Lots of praise and cuddles
Reading together
Singing rhymes and playtime
Talking about what you see and hear around you.
Where can my child access the Early Years Foundation Stage?
All childcare providers for 0-5 year olds who are registered with Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education) have a duty to provide all of the children that they care for with an early years education. This will include all day nurseries, pre school / playgroups and childminders.
How do I know that my child is receiving quality care?
Ofsted will inspect all early years providers in the borough to ensure that the quality of the education they are offering meets minimum standards. All registered childcare providers are also supported by the boroughs Early Years Advisory Team who provide support and guidance on the EYFS framework through regular visits and training.
