The local election, held on 4 May 2006, saw 174 candidates running for the 60 seats that make up the London Borough of Hounslow.
More than 57,000 local residents voted in the elections across the borough's 20 wards, which saw the Labour Party win 24 seats, and the Conservative Party gain an extra nine seats, giving them a total of 23 councillors.
The election saw the Community Group double their representation – they now have six seats in the council. The Liberal Democrats have four seats, while the remaining three seats are represented by the Hounslow Independent Alliance.
Election turnout stood at 37.8 per cent – 1.8 per cent higher than the estimated national average.
The ward with the highest turnout was Hounslow South, with 46.6 per cent of eligible voters filling in their ballot papers.
The lowest turnout was in Feltham West where 32.1 per cent of the electorate cast their vote. This still represented a huge increase on the last round of local elections in 2002, when only 20.5 per cent of voters in the ward voted.
