Turnham Green traffic and transport scheme

In May 2008 we started a major consultation on plans to improve traffic management and bus routing around Turnham Green.
A brochure was delivered to 14,000 households and businesses in Chiswick, providing detailed information about the proposed scheme and seeking feedback by 23 June.

The key elements of the scheme are:

  • Reversal of the traffic flow on Town Hall Avenue;
  • Changes to several bus routes to reduce queuing and passenger delays;
  • Signalisation of the Chiswick High Road / Town Hall Avenue junction to allow traffic to emerge from Town Hall Avenue and to provide safe pedestrian crossings across both streets;
  • A new signalised pedestrian crossing adjacent to Essex Place Square to cater for people walking between Sainsbury’s and the bus stop opposite;
  • Signalisation of the Heathfield Terrace / Sutton Court Road junction to allow buses to turn into Sutton Court Road and to provide safe pedestrian crossings across both streets;
  • Improvements to the Chiswick High Road / Sutton Lane North junction and the prohibition of the right turn from Sutton Lane North into Chiswick High Road;
  • Relocated bus stops to accommodate the various changed and existing bus routes;
  • New loading bays on the north side of Chiswick High Road;
  • New double yellow lines and loading restrictions around the Green.

Proposed changes to bus routes

The main benefit of the scheme is that all northbound buses would be removed from Sutton Lane North, and passengers on these services would no longer be subject to long delays.  Three southbound routes would use this street instead.
  • Northbound routes E3 and 272 services would use Town Hall Avenue, and southbound E3 and 272 buses would use Sutton Lane North.
  • Transport for London proposes to run route H91 via Chiswick High Road instead of Wellesley Road.  This would provide a faster and more reliable service for passengers travelling to and from the “Golden Mile” west of Chiswick Roundabout, and an easier interchange for those transferring to and from the Underground and Overground at Gunnersbury Station.
  • TfL proposes to extend route 440, which currently terminates at Turnham Green.  This route would run via Sutton Lane North, Wellesley Road, Oxford Road North and Chiswick High Road, terminating on Power Road at the junction with Gunnersbury Avenue.  The return service would run via Gunnersbury Avenue, Chiswick High Road, Oxford Road North, Wellesley Road, Heathfield Terrace, Town Hall Avenue and Chiswick High Road.
  • The locations of some of the bus stops would change - as shown in the brochure.

Other options

In developing and refining the scheme, a number of other options were proposed and assessed.  These are outlined in the brochure.  None of these offer the full range of benefits than derive from the proposed scheme.
