Twickenham Road improvements - phase 1

This consultation is now closed - thank you for your feedback.

We secured funding from Transport for London (TFL) to deliver a project along the A310 Twickenham Road to improve the highway environment for all road users.

The proposals, which were approved by the Isleworth & Brentford Area Committee on 11 November 2010, plans to improve areas for pedestrians, cyclists and bus passengers. The aim is to provide high quality cycle lanes along Twickenham Road, widening footways, adding on pram ramps at all crossing points, removal of street clutter, create new crossings and side road entry treatments.

A further aspect of the project is to ensure that any measures that are introduced assist with reducing the number of road traffic accident occurring along Twickenham Road. Over the last 3 years there have been a total number of 44 accidents (1 serious, 43 slight).

A number of individual highway improvement projects have been undertaken on Twickenham Road over the past fifteen years to improve the road presence.

Due to the size of the project, the design and construction period will extend over several years.

For this reason: we propose to divide the project into a number of phases.

Phase 1

Phase 1 consists of the following elements:

1 - Conversion of the sub-standard mandatory cycle lanes to 1.5m wide advisory cycle lanes and introduce (at any time) waiting restrictions (double yellow lines) and peak hour (7-10am and 4-7pm) loading restrictions to ensure the cycle lanes are not obstructed by parked cars.

2 - Provide green road surfacing through the zigzag areas of the pelican crossings, side road junctions and in the advance cycle stop line reservoirs to highlight the continuity of the cycle lanes.

3 - Undertake localised road widening along sections of Twickenham Road and amendments to some pedestrian islands to provide the carriageway width for continuing the 1.5m wide on-carriageway cycle lanes.

4 - Provide raised junction entry treatments on the following side roads to provide improved side-road crossings facilities for pedestrians and give drivers further encouragement to decrease their speed as they enter residential roads:

These are:

  • Crane Avenue

  • Woodstock Avenue

  • Bankside Close

  • Lynton Close

  • Chestnut Grove

  • Heddon Close

  • Mill Plat

  • Mill Plat Avenue

  • Linkfield Road

  • Mandeville Road

  • Teesdale Avenue

  • Teesdale Gardens.

5 - Provide a pedestrian refuge island and footway build-out adjacent to Mill Plat Avenue to provide an improved crossing facility for pedestrians.

6 - Amend the bus lane between Linkfield Road and Mill Plat Avenue to allow earlier and safer merge of traffic.

Later phases

The later phase will encompass localised streetscape improvements to the shopping parade near to Chestnut Grove as well as junction improvements at the Worton Road, South Street, St Johns Road and North Street junctions. Proposals for these phases of the project will be published to local areas to in  due course.

Statutory consultation on Phase 1 of the scheme including details for proposed waiting and loading restrictions, loading and parking bays and side road junction treatments will be published in the Hounslow Chronicle on 22 July 2011.
