Hounslow Council

Draft physical activity and sport strategy

This consultation is now closed - thank you for your feedback.

Having active lives is important for all of us in Hounslow and can help us in many ways to live long and productive lives.

In recognition of this Hounslow has developed a draft physical activity and sport strategy with the input of the local Community Sport and Physical Activity Network (CSPAN).

The strategy aims to acknowledge the wide ranging benefits for the borough of increasing participation in physical activity and sport while providing guidance and support for the many individuals and organisations who already contribute to helping Hounslow be more active. In the short and long term it is anticipated that this will mean that:

By 2013, following the London Olympics, Hounslow will have further increased opportunities for participation and volunteering in targeted areas & demonstrated that increasing participation is a priority for the borough and wider stakeholders.

And by 2022, Hounslow will have increased participation levels from current levels (18.7%), with at least 25% (one in four) of the population participating in physical activity and sport at least three times per week.

More specifically the success of the strategy will be monitored by assessing the extent to which the following outcomes are achieved:

  1. An increase in regular and sustained participation in physical activity and sport through improved access to local opportunities within geographical areas and populations that are known to have lower participation levels.

  2. A coordinated approach to local events and legacy development programmes for large sporting events such as the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games, capitalising on the “demonstration effect” and “festival effect” that they produce locally.

  3. Improved local networks together with sharing of local data and good practice to increase the wider understanding of participation rates, and improve how this is used to inform the development and targeting of new projects and initiatives in the borough.

  4. An increase in people in the borough volunteering to undertake supportive and leadership roles that promote participation in physical activity and sport.

  5. An improvement in sporting competition and performance within the borough through identification of priority sports and improved support structures.

It is recognised that a huge range of organisations in the borough work to promote participation in physical activity and sport. As a result, Hounslow Council and the CSPAN are  keen to get as much feedback as possible to help inform the final version of this strategy that will be published early in 2012.
