As part of the TfL funded Biking Borough programme, with the help of local cyclists, we have identified a number of small changes that could be made to our streets which would help make cyclists’ journeys safer, quicker or more comfortable.
One of the schemes identified is the need to provide for a formal route for cyclists heading south from The Butts area down into Brentford High Street. With Market Place being one way northbound, cyclists are currently mounting the pavement at the closed junction of Tallow Road to continue their journey southbound. Indeed, it is noted that a small DIY cycle ramp has been installed at this junction to assist them make this movement!
We now wish to formalise this arrangement by introducing a more fit-for-purpose cut through for cyclists at this point, whilst maintaining the no through road for other vehicles.
Our proposals are set out on a plan that you can download from this page. In summary, we are looking to lower the pavement to the same level as the road in the middle of the junction of Tallow Road/Market Place and replace the existing guardrailing with bollards, thus preventing vehicles cutting through, but not pedestrians and cyclists. This area will be marked with tactile paving as shared use for pedestrians and cyclists. Appropriate signage may also be introduced to highlight the facility from the High Street (for cyclists heading north) and from The Butts/Lion Way (for cyclists heading south).
In September 2011 we asked for your views. The results from this consultation will be reported back to ward councillors who will make a decision on whether to proceed with this proposal or not.
