The London Borough of Hounslow proposes to implement a programme of improvements for bus users and cyclists in the semi-pedestrianised (buses only) area at the west end of the Hounslow town centre, otherwise known as Cressy’s Corner.
The improvements will be funded by Transport for London, through their cycling and bus priority programmes.
Scheme details
The proposals are as follows:
Cyclists would be allowed to use the Cressy’s Corner bus route, in the same direction as the buses, and a "contra-flow” cycling route would be developed. This would require minimal changes to kerblines through the route. Red and green surfaces would be installed to delineate the respective routes.
Cycle lanes would be installed on Bath Road between Steve Biko Way and Lampton Road. A cyclists-only signal would be installed at the Bath Road / Lampton Road junction to allow eastbound cyclists to safely access the Cressy’s Corner route.
The kerbline at the Bath Road bus stop would be straightened to eliminate the small bay and provide more waiting space for bus passengers. A large purpose-built bus shelter/canopy would be erected on the enlarged footway. (The precise dimensions and design of this canopy would be subject to further development in consultation with the relevant property owners).
A short section of the pedestrianised part of Lampton Road would be reopened, to create a northbound buses-only route for bus services 120 and H20. A bus stop and shelter for these services would be provided on the east side of the Yates pub/restaurant. This would relieve pressure on the Bath Road bus stop, reduce the number of buses queuing at the traffic signals to exit the buses-only part of Bath Road, and save two minutes on average for passengers on the 120 and H20 buses. These buses would come out onto Lampton Road proper via a give-way assisted by box-junction markings on the carriageway.
By eliminating the sharp right turn from Bath Road into Lampton Road currently undertaken by the 120 and H20 buses exiting the Cressy's Corner route, this right turn could be banned, which would allow the cyclists-only signal for eastbound cyclists on Bath Road to share the same green phase as the westbound buses (81, 203, 222, H32, H98 and N9) in the traffic signal rotation.
A three-car taxi stand would be installed outside Yates, with taxis (black cabs) arriving via Bell Road and departing via Lampton Road. A small shelter would be provided for taxi passengers, in similar style to the adjacent bus shelters.
A one-bus stand would be provided on Lampton Road north of the new route 120 and H20 bus stop, for bus route H22. Buses leaving this stop would then turn left and their first pick-up point would be at the existing bus stop on Lampton Road on the northwest side of Yates. This would eliminate the bus stand in the car-park opposite, and free up more space for car-parking.
Raised paved tables would be provided in the carriageway at intervals along the Cressy’s Corner route to ensure that buses and taxis did not speed, and to facilitate pedestrians crossing the Cressy’s Corner route.
Any street furniture displaced would be reinstalled close by or replaced by furniture in matching style. Signage would be kept to a minimum. Carriageway and footway defects would be rectified.
These new arrangements would improve and enliven this part of the town centre, especially the stretch of Lampton Road that is currently closed to traffic.
