Hounslow Council

Giving notice

A notice is the legal paperwork which both parties must complete and sign in the register office before getting married.

It is displayed for 16 days in the registrer office for any legal objections that anyone may want to raise.

To give notice of a marriage or civil partnership you must:

  • have both lived for at least 9 consecutive days at a UK address

  • both give a separate notice even if you live at the same address

  • wait at least 16 days following your notice before the marriage/civil partnership can take place

When you attend to give your notices we will need to see certain documents. Contact us beforehand to ensure you bring everything required to save you a return visit.

If you wish to marry in Hounslow either at our register office or an approved premise in this district we will be happy to make a provisional booking for you. This service will enable you to hold your date for a generous period of one month whilst you assemble your documents and make any necessary arrangements to give notice. You can make a provisional booking by fax, letter or a personal visit. Your appointment will be confirmed once notice of marriage has been given.
