Hounslow is celebrating becoming the latest borough in London to win Fairtrade status.
The award followed a two-year campaign that has been led by Hounslow Council with the support of local faith groups, schools, business and residents.
Hounslow was officially recognised as a Fairtrade borough by meeting set criteria such as ensuring Fairtrade products are on sale across the borough, winning the support of local businesses and raising awareness amongst local residents.
As a result a wider range of Fairtrade items such as fruit, chocolate, tea, coffee and wine are now readily available across the borough.
The leader of Hounslow Council, Cllr Peter Thompson, has welcomed the award from the Fairtrade Foundation. He said: “This successful campaign shows what the borough can achieve when people work together towards a common goal.
“Winning Fairtrade borough status has involved a lot of people doing a lot of hard work and the best way we can recognise that is to build on our success.
“Promoting Fairtrade in the borough gives local people the opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of around 5 million people in the developing world.
“Buying Fairtrade products guarantees fair prices and decent wages for farmers, workers and their families.”
In order to retain Fairtrade borough status, Hounslow Council and the Hounslow Fairtrade steering group will continue to build on its success. A series of events have been organised across the borough to celebrate this.
