Exhuming a deceased body

The organisation and carrying out of an exhumation is fraught with difficulty and legal requirements, therefore securing of professional help cannot be stressed highly enough.

This professional help comes in the form of a funeral director.

A funeral director will liase, on behalf of the person requesting an exhumation, and draw together all other parties involved in the exhumation, such as the Cemetery Authority, Department of Constitutional Affairs (ex Home Office), Diocesan Registry (London) and of course their own funeral service personnel.

The involvement of the Department of Constitutional Affairs and Diocesan Registry are paramount in that they have to consider and issue a Licence or Faculty or both depending on where the body is buried, i.e. in consecrated ground or unconsecrated ground.

A more detailed explanation and further guidance will be given by the funeral director.

It should be appreciated that the process can take up to 8 weeks to complete.
