What is community safety

Community safety involves various agencies working together with the local community to tackle persistent crime and disorder that affect the quality of life of the people in the borough.

Along with the police we have a statutory duty under the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 to implement strategies to reduce the levels of crime and disorder in their area. This involves working in partnership with other agencies, such as the probation service and health authority, representatives from the local voluntary sector and business community; as well as local community groups.

These organisations have come together under the umbrella of the Community Safety Partnership as it is recognised that no one agency alone can deal effectively with this problem.

A crime audit was undertaken for the partnership in 2001, which identified the main crime issues for the borough. The findings of the audit provide the foundation for the Crime Reduction Strategy that came into effect in April 2002. This strategy includes a three-year programme for tackling some of short and the longer-term problems associated with crime in Hounslow through partnership working at various levels.

The aim is to make Hounslow a safer place to live, work in or visit.
