Electric vehicles - charging points

Existing Electric Vehicles (EV) charge points in Hounslow

Hounslow Council have installed over 400 public Electric Vehicle (EV) charge points on-street in residential areas, in town centres and in public car parks.

A range of different charge points have been provided:

  • slow charge points (3-5kw) fitted to lamp-columns, operated by Ubitricity and Joju,
  • fast charge points (7-22kw) operated by Source London
  • rapid charge points (50kw+) operated by BP Chargemaster

Chargepoints are available to use on a pay as you go tariff or there are also membership options. Customers can find their closest chargepoint using the Zap Map website which also details points provided by others in supermarkets, retail parks etc.

Existing on-street chargepoints do not currently have dedicated parking provision. As a result, EV owners are often unable to access the chargepoints due to petrol / diesel fuelled vehicles parking adjacent to where the chargepoints are located. To help improve accessibility to the chargepoints, the council plans to introduce dedicated charging bays next to all existing chargepoints within the borough in spring 2024. For further information, please see our EV delivery page.

EV Charging Strategy and future delivery

In November 2022, following a public consultation, the council approved its EV Charging Strategy. The strategy sets out how the council plans to deliver 2,000 additional charge points by May 2026. It details the type of charging points, their proposed distribution across the borough and any supporting measures that are needed.

Until recently the council has installed EV Chargepoints mainly in response to specific requests from the public. However, as EV ownership grows, the new strategy recognises that a more strategic, evidence-based approach is needed.

Delivery of the new charge points will commence from spring 2023, following more detailed site assessment work, a tender process and further consultation with properties located in the vicinity of the proposed charging points.
