Sustainability

Hounslow sets the standard on sustainability

We have ambitious plans to become one of the UK’s leading local authorities in the field of environmental sustainability.

Being environmentally sustainable means finding innovative ways to meet the borough’s present needs without compromising the ability off future generations to meet their own needs.

Research shows that councils can help cut carbon emissions by up to 150 million tonnes of CO2, around a third of the national target.

We are currently in the process of developing a climate change strategy to help the council and its partners take a co-ordinated approach to tackling the problem.

This strategy will be supported by a new campaign (provisionally called the Greener Hounslow campaign) designed to raise awareness of environmental sustainability and encourage positive behavioural change.

If the Greener Hounslow campaign is to be effective then the council must take a lead role in reducing the borough’s carbon footprint.

One of the ways we can do this is by ensuring along with our partners we put sustainability at the heart of everything we do.

To help make this ambition a reality we have created a sustainability standard, known as the Green Standard.

Hounslow’s Green Standard is designed to measure the green credentials of all the boroughs targets, policies and projects.

To support this process the council has devised a sustainability toolkit know as the Green Toolkit, to ensure that sustainability is embedded in all of the council’s projects, plans and policies particularly the new Local Area Agreement (LAA).

Hounslow’s Green Standard and Green Toolkit are groundbreaking initiatives that have been created with the help of a £10,000 grant from the Defra Sustainable Development Innovation Fund.

The toolkit is available to all of the council’s project officers and partners who need to ensure that any targets, policies and projects they develop can help the council embed sustainability throughout the borough.
