I have found a dead bird – what do I do?

DEFRA guidance advises that the public should call their helpline - 0845 9335 577 - if they find:
  • One or more dead swans, ducks or geese, or
  • More than three dead birds of the same species, or
  • More than five dead birds of different species in the same place.
Callers will be asked to provide details of the finding and location.

I have a single dead bird in my garden?

Birds can die of lots of different causes and it is normal to find dead birds from time to time. If the criteria above are met, call DEFRA. Otherwise, dispose of the carcass in the normal manner (preferably bury, it otherwise double bag it and place it in the household refuse).

I have handled a dead or dying bird – what do I do?
You do not need to take any special measures. However, if you have handled any wildlife, you should wash your hands with soap and water as quickly as possible.
I keep poultry, pigeons and/or caged birds – what should I be doing?
Preparations should be made so that the birds can be brought inside at short notice. Keepers of poultry are required to register with DEFRA if more than 50 birds are present.
