Hounslow Council

Benefit fraud

Benefit fraud costs Hounslow between £1.5 and £2 million per year. This is money that could be used to fund other vital services. Fraud is not a victimless crime. Anyone who knowingly fails to declare their true circumstances when receiving benefit is committing fraud.

Anybody claiming housing benefit has to tell the council about their personal circumstances so that the benefits section can assess the correct amount of benefit that is due.

Common types of fraud include failing to tell the council that you have:

  • Savings over £3000

  • Started working part time or full time

  • Someone has moved in with you

  • Other income including private pensions

  • Other benefits such as Working Families Tax Credits

  • Moved

  • Got married

  • Your partner has moved in with you (even if it is only temporary)

  • Started to rent a room to a lodger or tenant

  • Been getting housing benefit when the property is owned by yourself or a close family member
